Muscle memory: Fact or fiction?

Have you been working out in the past but stopped due to unseen circumstances?

Notice how quickly you are able to regain your muscles and strength? At least at a much faster pace than a rookie who is newly introduced to weightlifting. Why is that?

When muscles are newly subjected to overload, new myonuclei are formed just before the growth of the muscle fibers. Lets assume this rookie continues exercising for a while and suddenly stops for a few months or a year or so. Logically, the rookie’s muscles and strength will decrease in size (atrophy). In theory, the rookie is now as weak as he/she first started lifting weights and therefore should take him/her the same period of time to regain the strength that was accumulated over time. Instead, people find that their strength gains are much faster and takes less time than before to recover.

Do muscles have their own memory?

No, but even though the muscles reduced in size, the numbers of myonuclei remained the same throughout. The belief is that those myonuclei do in fact have the mechanism for achieving muscle memory, and for that reason they make it easier to once again increase fiber size and still perform the exercise correctly. The higher the number of myonuclei, the greater the capacity they have for muscle protein synthesis. Note: As we get older, the number of myonuclei in our cells decline and hence why the elderly find it more difficult to (re)build muscles.
