Culking = Cutting + Bulking: Is it possible?

It is usually recommended to either bulk alone or cut alone, but is it possible to do both simultaneously?

What is Bulking?

Bulking is eating at a caloric surplus to gain weight & build lean mass. During bulking, hormones shift towards anabolism making your body good at growing but not only muscles; fats too. The closer you are to your genetic myostatin's limit, the slower the growth of your muscles will become. This means you end up storing more fat than muscle the more fit you are & vice versa in cutting.

What is Cutting?

Cutting is eating at a caloric deficit to lose weight & burn fat. During cutting, hormones shift to catabolsim making your body good at using fat for energy. Although once you reach a level of leanness your hormones will signal your body to keep fat for survival's sake while shifting to protein and lean mass for energy.

Can you Cut and Bulk at the same time?

For beginners it is very possible to do both at the same time since the body has a lot of room for improvement on both ends. If you are overweight, even at a caloric deficit, you will easily build muscles since you don't have much to begin with & lose fat since you have a lot stored.

Culking Routines

For non-beginners, you may resort to re-composition (culking); many routines are suggested here, such as:

  • Weekly re-feeding or cheat days.

  • Maintaining calories with any form of resistance training.

  • Alternating between cutting & bulking daily.

  • Small bulk for two weeks then a moderate cut for one.

  • Caloric surplus on lift days & deficit on cardio/off days.

  • Influencing your P-ratio effects which deals with how your body stores or breaks down fat relative to muscle mass.

The concept for all are pretty much the same. Short phases of bulking and cutting with maintenance of desired body weight all year long while building muscles and burning fat. Science supports this possibility because you get the benefits of both anabolism & catabolism.
